Privacy policy

  • API Key

ReadMate Privacy Policy

Data handled

ReadMate handles the active page title, URL, metadata and readable text; user questions, necessary conversation history and model responses; AI provider settings, API endpoints, model names and API keys; interface preferences and custom reading mates.

ReadMate reads the active page only after the user explicitly opens the extension. Page content, questions and necessary conversation history are sent only after the user submits a request.

Use and sharing

Data is used only to provide page extraction, summarization, page-grounded questions and answers, reading mates and local conversation history. Model requests are sent directly to the AI provider selected by the user and are not routed through a server operated by the ReadMate developer. The developer does not receive page content, conversations or API keys. ReadMate does not sell user data or use it for advertising, credit decisions or purposes unrelated to its single purpose. Each AI provider processes data under its own terms and privacy policy.

Local storage and retention

Settings, custom reading mates and conversations are stored locally in the browser. ReadMate keeps up to 30 page conversations and the latest 100 messages in each conversation. API keys use session storage by default and are cleared when the extension is disabled, updated or the browser restarts. If the user explicitly chooses to remember a key, it is kept in extension local storage until the user deletes the data or uninstalls the extension. Chrome local storage is not an encrypted vault. Exported configurations never contain API keys.

Permissions and security

activeTab and scripting are used after a user action to extract the active page with code bundled in the extension. sidePanel displays the interface, storage retains local settings and conversations, and optional host permissions are requested only for the AI API origin selected by the user. Remote APIs must use HTTPS; localhost is allowed for local services such as Ollama. ReadMate does not execute remote JavaScript or WebAssembly, and model responses are handled only as text data.

User control

Users can delete a page conversation, reset locally stored data from ReadMate settings, or uninstall the extension to remove its stored data. Material changes to these practices will be disclosed on this page and, when required, prominently inside the extension.

ReadMate's use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
